About 40 lakh women are anticipated to participate in this festival to be held at the Bhagwati temple at Attakal in Thiruvananthapuram.

According to temple officials, female devotees from Kerala and beyond began to participate in the Attakal Bhagwati festival from Monday itself. These devotees will make dishes sitting on the roadside around the temple to offer to Bhagwati.

Attakal Bhagwati is the incarnation of Kannagi Devi

This era is organized by the Attakal Bhagwati Temple Trust. The temple official mentioned, "We are expecting a record 40 lakh women devotees this time. From now on, women have occupied the places and roads around the temple."

This temple is the temple of Attakal Bhagwati, who is considered an incarnation of Kannagi Devi. They're mentioned in the Tamil epic Shillapadikaram. In 2009, 35 lakh women devotees participated on this period and the event was also included within the Guinness E-book of World Records.

Christian women also participate

Priests will burn stoves in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple

The ritual begins when the priest burns the stove with fire from the goddess's sanctum sanctorum. Later in the afternoon, when the priests fetch water from the temple, the women return with their belongings.

The state government has introduced a half-day holiday in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday and a full-day on Tuesday for this festival.

Kerala Assembly for two days

Even the Kerala Legislative Assembly has been protected for two days. A senior police officer mentioned that the first batch of the police force has been deployed.

Traffic arrangements are being directed. 3500 additional police personnel will be deployed here to hold out the main ritual.

Importance

Aattukal Pongala, the festival celebrated on the Attukuk Bhagwati temple in Thiruvananthapuram, is the world's largest gathering of girls on any festival event. Pongala, which means 'boiling more', is a ritual in which ladies prepare sweet kheer (a candy dish (emulsion) made from rice, jaggery, coconut, and banana) and offer 'Goddess and Goddess'.

This ritual can solely be performed by ladies and during this festival the roads are blocked by the gathering of devout women. The goddess, who is reverently known as Tutt Attukalamma (Attukal Amma), is happy with this ritual.
