Holika Dahan Katha

Hiranyakashyap, son of the sage Kashyapa, had pleased Brahma Dev along with his penance, because of which no god, goddess, male, female, asura, yaksha or another creature would be capable to kill him. With this, he can't be killed both with arms nor with weapons, neither in day, nor at evening, nor within the afternoon, nor in the home, nor exterior, nor within the sky nor within the underworld. Because of this boon of Brahma, he turned egoistic and started thinking of himself as God. He started forcing his subjects to worship themselves. Used to torture them in many ways.

Prahlad had one son of Hiranyakashyap. He was a devotee of Lord Vishnu. When Hiranyakashyap came to learn about this, he tried to influence his son. He asked Prahlada to leave Vishnu and worship him. However where Prahlada was about to believe, he remained engrossed in devotion to Lord Vishnu.

Angered by this, Hiranyakashyap tortured Prahlada in various methods, however Prahlada was not deterred even by his Vishnu devotion. Hiranyakashipu ordered his son to push him down from the mountain and crush under the elephant's ft, however each time Lord Vishnu saved him.

Hiranyakashyap became more angry on this. Then, on her orders, Hiranyakashyap's sister Holika agreed to burn Prahlad in the fireplace. He had the boon that he wouldn't die by fire. On the full moon day, when Holika sat within the fireplace with the devotee Prahlad, Prahlad survived by the grace of Lord Vishnu and Holika died by burning in that fire. Due to this, Holika Dahan is done every year on Phalgun Purnima.
