Narmada Jayanti Katha

In keeping with the legend, Andhakasura was the son of Lord Shiva and mother Parvati. A demon Hiranayaksha, after doing severe austerities of Lord Shiva, sought a boon to get a strong son like him. Lord Shiva misplaced a single moment and gave his son Andhakasura to Hiranyaksha. Hiranyaksha was slaughtered by Lord Vishnu with the Varaha avatar. After which, to avenge the death of his father, Andhakasura by his own force gained his suzerainty over Devaloka.

After which Andhakasura attacked Kailash and a fierce battle took place between Lord Shiva and Andhakasura. After which Lord Shiva killed Andhakasura. After the slaughter of Andhakasura, the gods also came to know of their sins. After which all of them go to Lord Shiva and pray to him, Lord, inform us some solution to get rid of our sins.

After which a drop of sweat of Lord Shiva falls on the earth that drop was remodeled into a shocking girl. The woman was named Narmada and was given many boons. Lord Shiva ordered Narmada to circulate in the river form from the seventh day of the bright fortnight of Magh month and defeat the sins of the people. Narmada Jayanti is celebrated on this incarnation date of Narmada. Listening to Lord Shiva's orders, Mother Narmada tells Lord Shiva, "O Lord, how can I defeat people's sins. Then Lord Vishnu grants them a boon that you should have the power to defeat all sins."
