Another legend tells that on this day Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya with his wife, Goddess Sita and brother Lakshmana after completing 14 years of exile. To celebrate his arrival, the people of Ayodhya lit earthen lamps and since then Diwali is celebrated on the day of Kartik Amavasya. During the exile, Lord Rama killed Ravana, the king of demons, this day is also celebrated as a symbol of the victory of good over evil.

What are the rituals of Kartik Amavasya Puja and Vrat?

  • Take a morning bath in a holy lake, pond or river and offer argh to Lord Surya. Also offer sesame seeds in running water.
  • In the morning, recite the Navagraha Stotra and seek blessings from God. By doing this, the effect of all the planetary doshas present in your horoscope will be reduced.
  •  To get rid of all the evil effects of the planets, recite Vishnu Sahasranama.
  •  Light a lamp or earthen lamp in the temple to get rid of all the sufferings and effects set by Shani.
  •  Worship Lord Shiva and get anointed with honey on Shivling to get the blessings of Lord Shiva.

What is the significance of Kartik Amavasya?

On the night of this Amavasya, Goddess Shyama Kali is worshiped through a special tantric puja. Goddess Shyama is the first incarnation of Kali Devi Durga. This worship is done to end the immorality and negativity around us. This tantric puja brings happiness and prosperity to the people on the night of Kartik Amavasya and protects them from misfortune and dangers.

Goddess Lakshmi is believed to have appeared from the churning of the sea on the day of Kartik Amavasya. Hence this day is also known as Kamala Jayanti. Those who worship Goddess Lakshmi on this day get wealth, prosperity and happiness.
