Tulsi Vivah Vrat Kath: Story of Tulsi Vivah

Once upon a time, there was a mighty demon named Jalandhar. He was married to a girl named Vrinda. Vrinda was the ultimate devotee of Lord Vishnu. Jalandhar had become invincible due to its patriotic religion. It also defeated Lord Shiva in a battle. When he was invincible, he became proud and started harassing the daughters of heaven. Unhappy, all the gods went to the shelter of Lord Vishnu and started praying to end the terror of Jalandhar.

Lord Vishnu took the form of Jalandhar from his illusion and deceitfully destroyed the husbandry religion of Vrinda. This weakened the power of Jalandhar and he was killed in battle. When Vrinda came to know about the trick of Lord Vishnu, he cursed Lord Vishnu to become stone. At the prayers of the gods, Vrinda withdrew her curse. But Lord Vishnu was ashamed due to the deceit with Vrinda, so in order to keep Vrinda's curse alive, he manifested himself in a form of stone called Shaligram.

After withdrawing the curse given to Lord Vishnu, Vrinda became sati with Jalandhar. The basil plant got here out from the ashes of Vrinda in an effort to keep the dignity and purity of Vrinda the gods married the shaligram type of lord Vishnu to tulsi. To remember this incident, Tulsi is married to Shaligram every year on the day of Kartik Shukla Ekadashi i.e. Dev Prabodhani Ekadashi.

The Shaligram stone is obtained from the Gandaki River. Lord Vishnu told Vrinda that you will appear as Tulsi in the next life and will be more dear to me than Lakshmi. Your place will be on my head. I will not take food without you. This is the reason why Tulsi is kept in the offerings of Lord Vishnu. The offerings made without Tulsi are not accepted by Lord Vishnu.
