Digambar Jain Temple, situated near the Red Fort in Chandni Chowk area of  Delhi, the nation's capital, is the oldest Jain temple in Delhi. The temple is located on the intersection of Chandni Chowk and Netaji Subhash Marg.

Digambar Jain Temple History

One of the largest Jain temples in the nation, this temple was built within the 16th century by a military officer of the then Mughal emperor Shah Jahan during the Mughal rule. This temple was initially referred to as the farming couch temple and also the Lashkari temple.

Some people used to call it Urdu temple as it is in Urdu market. It is believed that there used to be a camp of Mughal soldiers at the place of the temple and a Jain officer of the army kept the statue of Lord Parshvanath here for darshan.

After this, when other Jain officers and soldiers of the army came to know about this, they too started coming here for darshan and progressively this place took the form of a small temple. Then later in 1935 the temple was renovated and its buildings were given a grand appearance. In the Mughal period, temples were not allowed to be built, so there was no formal peak in the temple before independence.

Interesting facts about Digambar Jain Temple

• This magnificent temple is constructed from red sandstone.
• Its main devotional web site is present on the first palate, besides the small courtyard of the temple is surrounded by a row of pillars.
• This temple is devoted to the 23rd Tirthankara Lord Parshvanath. This temple with 8 altars has the statue of Lord Parshvanath installed on the oldest altar.
• On one aspect of the other altar, the statue of Yakshini Padmavati of the 23rd Tirthankara Parshvanath can be seated.
• 4 idols are installed within the temple dealing with all 4 directions.
• The idol of Lord Adinath, the first Tirthankara of Jainism is also put in here.
• Three marble statues were installed by the Jain community inside the temple in 1548 (1491 AD), under the supervision of Bhattarak Jinchandra, installed by Jivraj Papadiwal.
• The special characteristic of this temple is that there are no monks to worship in the temple and right here Shraddhalu himself worships, however there's a particular person, who is called Vyasa, for cooperation within the worship material.

Features of newly built Jinwani temple

The walls are carved by artists of Rajasthan. The temple peak is 31 ft high. Three storeys in the temple, Seemandhar Samvasharan, Panchtirtha Jinwani Temple, Manastambha, Mahavir Swamy Temple, Panchaparmeshthi Temple, the composition of Panchthirtha with the Sammeed Shikhar, Swadhyaya Bhavan constructed.

On coming into the temple, the Namokar Mantra shall be heard and Indra will be seen doing floral rain on the Lord seated on the lotus. For this, sensors have been put in in the temple. The entire tableau of Jainism will be visible in this temple.
