Kartika Amavasya is celebrated on the new moon day of Kartik month. Along with celebrating Diwali, the offerings of ancestors and works of charity are also of great importance on this day. Goddess Shyama Kali is worshipped through a special Tantrik Puja. Goddess Shyama Kali is the first avatar of Goddess Durga. On Kartik Amavasya, going to a temple or poor person's house and lighting a lamp, removes the suffering related to Saturn. On this day, wake up early in the morning and bathe in a river, reservoir or holy tank and after offering arghya to the sun god, flow sesame into the running water.
